Computers of the future: what will they look like?

Each of us is astonished every time new computers become more powerful and can support more features. Recently, computers have become more compact, and they will make a next giant step in some years. We have seen how computers are reduced in size as the size of the microchip is becoming smaller and smaller. Now scientists know that we can reduce the size of the same microchip to the size of one atom!

Below some of the most exciting advances in computer technology are listed.

Quantum computers are the future

The weird world of quantum mechanics does not obey the general laws of classical physics. The quantum bit (qubit) doesn’t exist in typical 0 or 1 binary forms of today’s computers - qubit can exist in one of them or both systems simultaneously. This hardly noticeable difference is the reason why quantum transistors allow your computer to run billions of times faster than today's computers! Simultaneously with the existence of many obstacles that must be overcome, every day new methods are developed and new discoveries are made. Many people think that quantum computers can become a reality in some 5-10 years.

Progress in optical and photonic computers

Optical computers use the speed of light in their work, not the speed of electricity, which makes them the best conductors of data. Electricity travels at a rate of approximately 1/10 the speed of light, but optical or photonic transistors can run thousands of times faster than today's generation computers. Unlike electricity, light beams may cross each other (pass through each other), eliminating the need to use large conventional wiring systems. This allows an optical computer to be of such a small size which is needed for a particular task.

Nanodot Storage - a new hard drive

Nanodot may be 50 nanometers wide and have north and south poles. It can respond to external changes, which makes it a prime candidate for the role of the storage device. Today's study showed that the volume of nanodot drives may equal to 100 times the capacity of currently existing hard drives while occupying much less space. Nanodot Storage is already quite close, and it certainly will revolutionize the field of today's data storage.

Spintronics - another promising but still incredible type of storage device

Real computer memory has limitations depending on operations that approach the limits of the size of transistors. Besides, the core memory of the computer (the reserve of temporary memory) loses information when the computer shuts down. Now, when we look at things on the quantum level, there are new opportunities. One sphere, called «Spintronics», measures the rotation of the electron. What appeals to us is that even when the computer is turned off, the information contained in the temporary memory is not lost. The Spintronic memory works with only a few atoms on the surface created by a gas medium (gallium or indium arsenide), which is today a promising new material.
